The Youngstown State bowling team beat two top-five opponents as part of an unbeaten day and broke two school records in the process during a memorable first day at the Big Red Invitational. The tournament is being hosted by Nebraska at Hollywood Bowl in Lincoln, Neb.
The Penguins were the only team in the eight-team field to post a 5-0 record on Friday, and they posted the third-highest total pinfall in their five Baker matches. YSU totaled 5,126 pins, which was three behind Arkansas State. The host Huskers lead the field after day one with 5,247 pins.
Youngstown State set school records for highest Baker match and highest Baker game in their win over No. 5 Arkansas State. YSU totaled 1,124 in the match behind a school-best 276 game that featured 10 strikes. That total was also the highest in the house on Friday by 25 pins.
"The ladies did a great job staying patient and maintaining their focus on execution and togetherness," said head coach Doug Kuberski. "We trailed in every match, but the ladies were there for each other and channeled some powerful energy throughout the day, which really helped us close out sets. We'll get some solid rest tonight and look to keep the energy flowing heading into the weekend."
Youngstown State topped 950 in all five matches, and it bowled at least 1,025 three times en route to its five wins. The Penguins topped Prairie View A&M 1,025-987 in the opening match, and they followed that with a 951-919 win over Augustana. YSU then posted back-to-back victories over teams ranked in the top five of the National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, beating No. 3 Nebraska 1,050-1,030 and No. 5 Arkansas State 1,124-1,059. YSU finished the perfect day with a 976-947 triumph over Texas Southern.
Youngstown State will look for another solid day on the lanes on Saturday with five traditional matches beginning at 10:25 a.m.
