Bowling Earns Two Top-15 Wins on Day One at Northeast Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team beat a pair of top-15 teams as part of a three-win day as it opened its spring semester schedule at the Northeast Invitational. The tournament is being held at AMF Bristol Park Lanes in Croydon, Pa.

The Penguins topped No. 14 Delaware State and No. 6 Maryland Eastern Shore in Baker matches, and they also beat Howard on Friday. YSU's two losses came to the co-hosts of the tournament, No. 19 Sacred Heart and LIU.

"Today was a tough grind mentally and physically," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "I thought we did a pretty solid job of finding a way to salvage sets and keep ourselves in matches, but we have to find a way to finish the bigger games off tomorrow if we are going to rise up the standings. I see us as in a strong position heading into the weekend."

The Penguins had their lowest-scoring match to start the day in a 933-859 loss to Sacred Heart, but the rebounded to win their next three matches. YSU beat Delaware State 884-785 for the first win and followed that with its highest set of the day in a 969-925 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. YSU bowled its best game, a 214 in game two, in a 930-861 victory over Howard to improve to 3-1 in head-to-head matches, and the Penguins were edged 884-870 by LIU to end the day.

Youngstown State posted a total pinfall of 4,512 in their five Baker matches, which puts them 14th in the 26-team pool after the first day of qualifying.

The Penguins will compete in five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 9:55 a.m. Live video of the matches will be available on the YSUsports YouTube channel.
