Box Score Ny'Dajah Jackson scored the final seven points of the game, and the Youngstown State women's basketball team earned a gritty 79-74 victory at Oakland on Thursday evening.
Jackson scored nine of her game, season and career-high 23 points in the fourth period to lead a balanced scoring attack. To back up Jackson, Gabby Lupardus scored a career-high 18 points, Chelsea Olson scored 14, and Jen Wendler had 11. Olson added 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double, and she eclipsed 750 career points, 500 career rebounds and 250 career assists in the win.
Jalisha Terry scored 18 points to lead Oakland, and she scored seven straight points during a 10-0 run that gave the Golden Grizzlies a 74-72 lead with 1:34 remaining.
Following a YSU timeout, Jackson hit a straightaway 3-pointer on a pass from Olson to put the Penguins up 75-74. Wendler blocked Chloe Guingrich's shot on Oakland's next possession, and Jackson drive down the left side of the lane to put YSU ahead 77-74 with 21 seconds remaining. Jackson then drew an offensive foul on a moving screen, and she made two free throws with 12.7 seconds left for the final points of the game.
Youngstown State had a nice bounce-back game offensively by shooting 46.7 percent from the field and making 8-of-15 from 3-point range. Oakland shot 35.9 percent but had a nine-point edge at the free-throw line. YSU led for more than 29 minutes.
Lupardus made her first career 3-pointer at the 7:22 mark of the opening period, and she went on to score seven points in the quarter to help YSU build an 18-16 lead after 10 minutes. The Penguins led by six twice in the quarter before Oakland scored the final four points.
The largest lead for either team in the second quarter was three, and there were five ties and nine lead changes in the period. Lupardus' second triple of the game gave YSU its final lead of the quarter at 35-33, and Oakland scored seven of the next nine points to go up 40-37 with 29 seconds remaining. Maddie Schires hit a long two on YSU's final possession to get the Penguins to within 40-39 at halftime.
Jackson's first of two 3-pointers capped a 7-0 run with 3:38 left in the third quarter that put YSU ahead 55-50, and YSU's lead reached six for the first time since the first quarter when Mady Aulbach's triple with just over a minute to play made the score 60-54. YSU led 60-56 heading into the fourth.
Oakland got to within 62-60 on a Kahlaijah Dean free throw two minutes into the fourth period, but Olson hit a quick 3 to spark an 8-2 run that gave YSU its largest lead at 70-62. The Penguins led by eight again at 72-64 with 4:05 remaining on a 15-foot jumper by Quinece Hatcher, but Oakland scored 10 straight points to go up 74-72 with 1:34 left.
The Penguins called timeout to regroup, and Jackson hit the go-ahead 3-pointer to start her seven-point run to end the game.
Youngstown State will go for the weekend sweep as it concludes its five-game road stretch at Detroit Mercy on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN and ESPN+.
