Penguins Fall to CMU, Finish Second at Red & White Invitational

The Youngstown State volleyball team had to settle for second place at the Red & White Invitational as it fell to Central Michigan in the championship match on Saturday at Beeghly Center.
The Chippewas lost their first two sets of the tournament on Friday morning to Eastern Michigan, then proceeded to win their next nine sets to finish the weekend 3-0. Youngstown State won its two matches on Friday before dropping the finale to the streaking Chippewas. The set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 25-22.
Aleah Hughes Had 11 kills, but Central Michigan forced the senior outside hitter into 11 errors as well. Erin Kalahar finished up a solid weekend with eight more kills, and Margaux Thompson had a match-best 24 digs from the libero position. Hughes and setter Alexia Byrnes were named to the all-tournament team.
Tournament MVP Kalina Smith led Central Michigan with 12 kills and 11 digs.
The Penguins had just two fewer kills than the Chippewas, but they committed 11 more attack errors and had four more ball-handling errors.
YSU's biggest lead of the match came early in the first set when Alyssa Oswald and Aimee Beaupre blocked Megan Sivertsen to put the Penguins up 7-3. CMU scored nine of the next 11 points to go up 12-9, and the Chippewas did not trail the rest of the match.
Youngstown State finished the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 6-7 record and will begin Horizon League play next weekend at Northern Kentucky and Wright State.
