Late Run Pushes Men's Basketball Past IUPUI, 83-73

Indianapolis, Ind. -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team used a 10-0 run late in the second half to come away with an 83-73 win over IUPUI on Saturday afternoon in the Horizon League opener for both schools at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
The Penguins improve to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in the Horizon League while the Jaguars fall to 4-10 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Sophomore Darius Quisenberry tied a season-high with 23 points, including 18 in the second half, to lead four Penguins scoring in double figures. Junior Naz Bohannon posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, sophomore Jelani Simmons had 12 points and junior Michael Akuchie had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Leading the Jaguars was Jaylen Minnett and Marcus Burk with 16 points each and Elyjah Goss with 13 points and 18 rebounds.
Trailing by three, 67-64, Akuchie hit his third 3-pointer of the game to knot the game and started the Penguins' 10-0 at the 4:09 mark. Bohannon converted an old-fashioned three-point play, Quisenberry hit a jumper and Simmons made two free throws to give the Penguins, who shot 57.1 percent from the field in the second half, a seven point lead, 74-67, at the 2:14 mark.
After a Jaguar made free throw, Quisenberry and Bohannon each made jumpers in the paint to push the YSU lead to 10, 78-68, at the 1:16 mark. Quisenberry made another jumper in the paint and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to seal the win.
In the first half, Simmons gave the Penguins an offensive spark scoring 10 of his 12 points before halftime. Simmons connected on 4-of-6 from the field, including a 3-pointer and a charity toss.
Both teams shot the ball well with the Penguins connecting on 48.4 percent from the floor and the Jaguars making 52 percent of their field-goal attempts.
The Penguins led by as many as nine in the first half, which saw seven lead changes and four ties, but the Jaguars chipped the lead down to three, 41-38, at the intermission.
For the game, Youngstown State shot 52.5 percent from the field, 40.9 percent from 3-point range and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line.
The Penguins visit UIC, Monday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. at Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago, Ill.
