The Youngstown State bowling team went undefeated in its three bracket matches on Sunday to finish off an impressive final two days at the Track Kat Klash. The tournament was held at Emerald Lanes in Houston, Texas, and hosted by Sam Houston State.
The Penguins went 3-0 on Sunday, and they won their final seven matches at the tournament. Youngstown State's three wins in the best-of-seven Baker bracket format elevated its finish to ninth in the 16-team field, which is its best placing at the Track Kat Klash in its four appearances.
Youngstown State registered an average game of 200.1 on Sunday, which was third behind tournament champion Nebraska (202.5) and third-place Arkansas State (206.6).
"We built from our finish yesterday and took the information we gathered from the first two days to clean up a lot of things across the board," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "Winning three matches on Sunday is always nice, and it's especially nice when you average 200. I'm proud of this group for staying together and growing together throughout the weekend."
An uncharacteristically low-scoring Friday put the Penguins in a hole in the standings, and they were seeded 12th after two days of qualifying. Youngstown State beat Jackson State 4.5-1.5 in the 11-vs.-12 match to start Sunday, and a 4-2 victory over Prairie View A&M followed. YSU then beat fellow Southland Bowling League member and No. 17 Louisiana Tech 4-2 to finish off the weekend.
Youngstown State topped 200 four times against Louisiana Tech, including an impressive 247 in game three in which it rolled seven straight strikes at one point. YSU also broke 200 twice versus Prairie View A&M and three times in the win over Jackson State.
YSU's next tournament will be the SFA Ladyjack Classic on Nov. 15-17. Stephen F. Austin will host the tournament at Sheridan Lanes in Kenosha, Wis.
