Penguins Finish Final Fall Tournament in Eighth Place

The Youngstown State bowling team went 1-2 in bracket play on Sunday and finished the Hawk Classic Invitational eighth in a field of 18 teams. The tournament was held at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del.
The Penguins began the day by beating North Carolina A&T, the eighth-ranked team in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, in seven games to start the day. YSU then fell 4.5 to 1.5 to tournament host and seventh-ranked Maryland Eastern Shore, and North Carolina A&T won a rematch 4-2.
"I love the way we battled all weekend," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "Now we have time to reflect on the first half and prepare ourselves for our first tournament back in January."
"Overall, we grew a lot together as a unit the semester, and we have a lot to be proud of. We also know we have some things to work on. I can't wait until we're back together in January to continue our elevation."
Youngstown State was down 3-1 to the Aggies before rallying for the victory. The Penguins won the first game, lost the second and tied in the third versus UMES as the match stood at 1.5-1.5. The Penguins had their best game of the match at 211 in game four, but UMES countered with a 242 and went on to win the final three games.
YSU held a 2-1 lead in the rematch versus North Carolina A&T, and the Penguins had a three-pin loss in game six that could have given them a 3-2 edge. The Aggies took the sixth game 199-184.
Sam Houston State won the tournament that featured 15 ranked teams, and Arkansas State finished second. The Penguins placed ahead of No. 15 Delaware State, No. 9 Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 14 Tulane, No. 13 Lincoln Memorial, No. 25 Monmouth, No. 16 Saint Francis U and No. 24 LIU.
Youngstown State's spring schedule will resume in exactly two months as the Penguins will compete at the Red Flash Invitational on Jan. 24-26.
