Penguins Break Digs Record in Four-Set Win at Cleveland State

The Youngstown State volleyball team set a new school record for digs in a match, and Brooklen Pe'a had 16 kills in 18 digs in a four-set win at Cleveland State on Friday evening. The set scores were 25-18, 16-25, 26-24, 25-20.
Pe'a was one of five Penguins with at least 17 digs, and her 16 kills were a match high. She had plenty of help from her teammates as Margaux Thompson had 20 digs, Alexia Byrnes and Reilly Seagroves had 18, and Aleah Hughes posted 17.
YSU's 101 digs were the most in a four-set match in the rally-scoring era, surpassing the previous record of 100 that had stood for 12 years.
Offensively, Thompson had nine kills, Byrnes and Aimee Beaupre had eight, and Hughes added seven.
Youngstown State stopped an eight-match losing streak to Cleveland State in which the Vikings swept them each time. The Penguins also won their second Horizon League road match in as many weeks.
YSU had seven more kills and 17 more digs than their Northeast Ohio rival. Cleveland State had 15 blocks, but YSU had four more aces and three fewer serving errors.
Trinniti Hall led the Vikings with 14 kills and 10 blocks.
With the score tied at 14-14 in the opening set, Youngstown State scored seven straight points behind Pe'a's serve to take a 21-14 lead. Pe'a had two aces in that spurt, and Byrnes and Beaupre both had two kills apiece. YSU went on to win 25-18.
Cleveland State led wire-to-wire in the second set to tie the match, and the Vikings had a great chance to go up a set when it took a 24-21 lead in the third. Pe'a had a kill for a side out, and the Penguins scored the next four points on Erin Kalahar's serve. A Beaupre kill and an attack error by Hall tied the score at 24-24, and Pe'a and Beaupre assisted on a block of Hall to give the Penguins their set point. Thompson finished it off with a kill to give YSU a 2-1 lead in the match.
Youngstown State battled through six ties in the fourth set but never trailed in the fourth set. The final tie came at 17-17, and a kill by Kalahar and an ace by Byrnes gave the Penguins a two-point cushion. YSU then scored the final three points of the match on a kill by Pe'a, an attack error by Hall and a kill by Beaupre.
Youngstown State will try to finish off a 2-0 weekend when it hosts Oakland on Sunday at 2 p.m.
