The Youngstown State volleyball team got double-doubles from Margaux Thompson and Alexia Byrnes in a 3-0 loss to Oakland on Sunday at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 27-25, 25-18, 25-19.
Thompson posted 11 kills and 15 digs, and Byrnes registered 27 assists and 11 digs for the Penguins. Erin Kalahar added six blocks, but Oakland had a big 51-35 edge in kills and a 13-8 advantage in blocks to win for the fifth straight match. Jamie Walling had 14 kills in 28 attempts, and Megan Hobler posted seven blocks for the Golden Grizzlies.
The Penguins had a pair of set points in the opening set as an Aleah Hughes put them up 24-22. Walling's sixth kill of the set gave Oakland a sideout, and she later had a solo block of Hughes to give Oakland its first set point at 25-24. Kalahar answered with a kill to knot the set at 25-25, but another kill by Walling and a block by Hobler and Mackenzie Schneider gave Oakland the 1-0 lead in the match.
Brooklen Pe'a gave the Penguins a 12-8 lead with a kill in the second set, but Oakland scored the next seven points behind Haley Brown's serve to go up 15-12. YSU got no closer than two the rest of the set.
Oakland then built a 13-4 lead in the third set, but Youngstown State kept battling and scored 10 of the next 12 points to get within 15-14. The deficit was just one again at 16-15 when Oakland scored four straight points to take a 20-15 cushion. A Valor Haggerty block got the Penguins within 20-18, but that's as close as the red and white would get.
Youngstown State will begin the second half of Horizon League play with a pair of road matches next week. The Penguins will play at Milwaukee on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Eastern, and they'll wrap up the road trip and their October schedule on Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. Eastern against UIC. Friday's match will be broadcast on ESPN3, and Saturday's contest will be on ESPN+.
