Chicago, Ill -- The No. 3Youngstown State softball team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead but No. 6 IUPUI used a pair of four-run innings to defeat the Penguins, 8-6, in the opening round of the 2018 Horizon League Championship.

With the loss the Penguins loss to 24-25 overall and face Northern Kentucky in an elimination game. IUPUI improves to 15-31 overall and will play No. 2 Oakland, Thursday, at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The Penguins scored four in the bottom of the first inning on a wild pitch, a run-scoring single by Elizabeth Birkbeck and a two-run home run by senior Stevie Taylor. Yazmine Romero and Lexi Zappitelli each walked to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Maddi Lusk, Romero scored on a wild pitch and Birkbeck singled and moved to second on an error and Zappitelli scored to put YSU up 2-0. Taylor then belted a two-out, two-run home run over the left-center field fence to give the Penguins a 4-0 cushion.

Youngstown State added a run in the bottom of the second, Romero's infield single plated senior Lexi Roach, who walked, advanced to second on a wild pitched moved to third on a ground out by Nikki Saibene.

The Jaguars added four runs in the top of the fourth and four more in the top of the seventh to take an 8-5 lead.

From the bottom of the third through the bottom of the sixth, IUPUI starter Megan Overton retired 12 of the 13 batters she faced.

The Penguins mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh when pinch-runner Dani Dadig scored on Zapittelli's single down the left-field line, but the game-tying run was left stranded.
