Softball Gains Split on Day One at Hampton

Hampton, Va. -- The Youngstown State softball team cranked out 18 hits en route to an 11-3 win in six innings over Lafayette on Friday morning at the Hampton Tournament. The Penguins dropped their second game to Buffalo, 8-3
The Penguins are now 3-3 on the season.
Senior Hannah Lucas led the Penguins offensive outburst with three hits while senior Stevie Taylor went 2-for-4 with two a two-run home run and two RBIs. Sophomore Maddi Lusk drove in three runs and had two singles. Sophomore Tatum Christy posted a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in two runs while freshman Nikki Saibene also had two hits with a double and two RBIs. Junior Lexi Zappitelli also had two singles for the Penguins.
Freshman pitcher Elle Buffenbarger picked up her first collegiate win tossing five innings with four strikeouts and not allowing an earned run. Junior Paige Geanangel picked up the save and struck out three.
After Lafayette scored three unearned runs in the top of the third, but the Penguins answered with four in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Lusk got the Penguins within one with a two-run single that scored Miyah Mitchum and Lucas. Christy's single to center field plated Saibene and Lusk to put the Penguins up a run.
The Penguins exploded for seven run in the bottom of the sixth to enforce the mercy rule. Lusk began the surge with a run-scoring single and Saibene doubled to right field scoring Cali Mikovich and Zappitelli to push the YSU lead to 7-3. Taylor followed with a two-run home run - her first of the year - to left-center field. Run-scoring singles by Elizabeth Birkbeck and Dani Dadig plated Christy and Alexis Roach, respectively, to end the game.
Against Buffalo, the Penguins tallied just three hits in the 8-3 loss.
