Five Score Double Figures as Women's Basketball Beats Carlow 90-31

Box Score

The Youngstown State women's basketball team shot 50 percent and had all nine of its players score at least six points in a 90-31 victory over Carlow on Friday evening at Beeghly Center.

The Penguins improved to 4-0 for the fourth time in the last seven years with the victory, and Carlow dropped to 0-3.

YSU shook off a sloppy first period to score 77 points and shoot 56.9 percent from the field over the final 30 minutes. The Penguins missed their first eight attempts from 3-point range but finished 11-for-30 in the game.

Defensively, the Penguins held the Celtics to 21.1 percent shooting and held a 57-26 edge in rebounding. The 31 points tied for the third-fewest by an opponent in school history, and it was the lowest total by an opponent since 1990.

Freshman Madison Mallory scored a game-high 15 points in 26 minutes off the bench, going 6-for-11 overall and 3-for-8 from beyond the arc. Alison Smolinski made four 3s and scored 14 points, and McKenah Peters, Deleah Gibson and Mary Dunn each had 11. Amara Chikwe grabbed 11 rebounds.

YSU's Sarah Cash scored on the first possession of the game, and the Penguins never trailed. Cash played just six minutes but finished with six points and four rebounds against the NAIA program. The Penguins had just nine points eight minutes into the game, but Carlow was just as cold as it was 2-for-13 from the field in the opening period.

Dunn scored in the final seconds of the first period to give YSU a 13-4 lead, and the Penguins went on to outscore the Celtics 25-6 in the second period. YSU was 6-for-7 from beyond the arc in the third period as it extended the lead to 50 at the end of the quarter, and the Penguins held a 19-10 edge in the fourth.

Youngstown State will travel to its nearest rival on Tuesday to play Kent State. Tipoff at the M.A.C. Center is set for 5 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on 570 WKBN and ESPN+.
