Box Score New Mexico hit .393 with 43 kills in a sweep of the Youngstown State volleyball team on Friday morning at Toledo's Savage Arena. It was the Penguins' first match at the Blue/Gold Invitational, and the set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-18.
The Penguins hit a respectable .218 but couldn't match the offense of the Lobos. New Mexico hit at least .320 in all three sets and had three players finish with at least six kills.
Margaux Thompson led the Penguins with nine kills, and Sarah Varcolla posted six kills in 14 attempts without committing an error.
The score was tied just once in the first set, but the Penguins were within one at 19-18 after a Paige Saunders kill. UNM went on a four-point burst to go up 23-18 en route to the 25-21 win.
Both teams had their best offensive performance of the match in the second set as YSU had 16 kills on a .387 attack percentage and New Mexico had 15 kills on a .519 clip. The Penguins trailed just 18-16 before the Lobos closed out the match on a 7-3 run.
New Mexico then scored six of the first seven points of the third set and went on a 9-4 run later to extend its lead after YSU closed to within 7-5.
Youngstown State will play Tennessee Tech at 5 p.m.
