Senior outfielder Lorenzo Arcuri homered for the fifth time in the last three games, but the Youngstown State baseball team lost its series opener at Richmond 7-1 on Friday afternoon.

Arcuri's home run in the eighth inning provided the only offense for the Penguins, who also committed two costly errors in the middle infield that led to three unearned runs. The Penguins had six hits but had opportunities. They grounded into two double plays and left eight runners on base.

After a double play erased Anthony Rohan being hit by a pitch to start the game, the Spiders scored an unearned run with two outs in the first inning to go up 1-0. The Penguins stranded two runners on base in the second inning, and another two-out error led to two more unearned runs in the bottom of the inning as Richmond increased its lead to 5-0.

YSU left the bases loaded in the third, but Richmond starter Robbie Baker allowed just two base-runners over the next four innings. Trey Bridis hit a two-out double with the bases empty in the sixth, and Anthony Santoro was hit by a pitch in the seventh. Meanwhile, the Spiders cushioned their lead with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Arcuri's home run went over the fence in left-center on a 2-0 pitch with one out in the eighth.

YSU starter Collin Floyd allowed five runs, only two of which were earned on five hits and three walks in five innings. Joel Hake allowed the runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and Dion Felger blanked the Spiders in the eighth.

Baker allowed three hits and struck out seven batters in his seven innings of work to earn his first win of the season.

Youngstown State and Richmond will continue their three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
