Hughes Sets Digs Record as Volleyball Beats UNCG

Youngstown State redshirt freshman Aleah Hughes set a school record for digs in a four-set match, and the Penguins beat UNC Greensboro in four sets on Saturday morning at the Tussle in the Triad. The set scores were 25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 25-21.
The Penguins lost in straight sets, 25-13, 25-16, 25-11, at Big South Conference preseason favorite High Point later Saturday.
Hughes, a graduate of nearby Western Reserve High School, had nine digs in the second set and seven in each of the other three sets. She surpasses the previous rally-scoring mark of 29 by Laurie Shives in 2009. Hughes' previous career high was 13.
Lori Vanbeek led the offense with 18 kills, which tied her career high, and she added a match-best six blocks. Lauren Blanco (17), Val Jeffery (13) and Sam Brown (11) also had double digits in digs. Youngstown State hit .272 overall and at least .297 in each of its set wins.
Against High Point, Vanbeek had six kills and two blocks, and Blanco had 10 digs. High Point hit .333 as a team and registered 12 aces.
Youngstown State will play three matches at the Akron Invitational next weekend.
