Youngstown, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball team won for the 10th time in 11 games after a 3-1 victory over Niagara on Wednesday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field. The Penguins were winning game two, 5-0, in the bottom of the fourth before rain cancelled the game.

The Penguins improve to 17-12 overall while the Purple Eagles fall to 2-19.

Junior Maria Lacatena and senior Katie Smallcomb each had two hits and sophomore Cali Mikovich scored twice for the Penguins.

Freshman pitcher Paige Geanangel (8-6) picked up her seventh win in her last eight decisions scattering eight hits and striking out three in the complete-game win.

The Penguins scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning when Mikovich, who doubled, scored on a ground out.

In the bottom of the third, Stevie Taylor's run-scoring single up the middle plated Mikovich to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.

After the Purple Eagles cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the top of the fourth, Lacatena drilled a solo home run over the center field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning and gave the Penguins a 3-1 lead.

The Purple Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning with two outs but Geanangel closed out the game with a strikeout.

Youngstown State hosts Horizon League foe UIC in a three-game series, April 8-9, at the YSU Softball Field
