Castiglione's Grand Slam Lifts Softball to Split at Kent State

Kent, Ohio -- Senior Miranda Castiglione hit a two-out grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 7-6 win in game one of a doubleheader split against Kent State on Wednesday afternoon. The Penguins lost game two, 3-2.

With the split, the Penguins improve to 24-18 overall while the Golden Flashes move to 29-18 overall.

Trailing 6-3 after six innings, Hannah Lucas began the YSU rally with a one-out single up the middle. Maria Lacatena and Cali Mikovich's two-out single up the middle loaded the bases for Castiglione. It marked Castiglione's first career grand slam and her ninth home run of the season.

Castiglione went 2-for-4 with a double, grand slam, two runs scored and five RBIs in the opening-game win.

The Penguins trailed, 2-0, after two innings but in the top half of the third the Penguins took the lead with a three-run frame. Lucas was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on Demi Ann Patonis' single to right-center field. Castiglione's double to right field plated Lucas, and Brittney Moffatt's two-run single gave the Penguins a 3-2 lead.

The Penguins' lead was short-lived after the Flashes answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth.

In the nightcap, the Penguins scored an unearned run in the top half of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead that stood for four-and-a-half innings. Kent State knotted the game up at 1-1 iin the bottom of the fifth and scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Moffatt's two-out double scored Castiglione, but the Penguins could not complete the comeback.

The Penguins visit Detroit for a three-game series, May 3-4, in Detroit, Mich.
