Softball Drops Pair at Memphis, 13-5, 4-2

Memphis, Tenn. -- The Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games to Memphis, 13-5 and 4-2 on Tuesday at Tiger Softball Softball Stadium.
With the losses, the Penguins fall to 7-9 on the season.
Cali Mikovich went 4-for-5 on the day with a double and an RBI while Miranda Castiglione and Alexandria Gibson each had two hits in the opener.
In game one, the Penguins trailed 3-0 after two innings but knotted the game up in the top of the third on a run-scoring single by Castiglione and a two-run single by Gibson.
After the Tigers went up 6-3, Mikovich scored on an error in the top of the fourth and drove in Castilgione with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.
Memphis scored three in the fifth and four more in the sixth in invoke the mercy rule.
In the game two, freshman pitcher Lexi Zappitelli held the Tigers at bay for four innings while the Penguins owned a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Katie Smallcomb's sacrifice fly to left field plated Maria Lacatena, who singled and went to third on Mikovich's double. Mikovich went 3-for-3 in game two.
Memphis scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
Stevie Taylor's ground out in the top of the seventh plated Mikovich, but the Penguins would not get any closer.
The Penguins visit Mississippi, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in Oxford, Miss.
