Nashville, Tenn. -- Senior Miranda Castiglione went 5-of-8 with a home run and five runs batted in and tied the school career stolen base record as the Youngstown State softball team split on day one of the Purple and Gold Challenge at Lipscomb on Friday.

The Penguins defeated Indiana State, 12-2, but lost to Troy, 10-8, in eight innings to move to 5-5 on the season.

In the opener, Castiglione led a 14-hit attack going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and a stolen base, which tied the school mark. Maria Lacatena went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three runs batted in.

Sarah Dowd went 2-for-4 and belted her fourth home run of the season to move into a tie for third on the YSU caerer home run list with 22.

Alexandria Gibson, Cali Mikovich and Katie Smallcomb also had two hits apiece for the Penguins.

Junior Caitlyn Minney allowed just four hits and struck out two to pick up her fifth win of the season.

Against Troy, Castiglione and Mikovich each went deep, had two hits and drove in three runs each in the extra-inning loss.

Mikovich belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to help the Penguins to a 4-0 lead after one inning. Castiglione crushed a two-out, two-run home run - her first of the year - in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Gibson and Smallcomb also had two hits each for the Penguins.

Youngstown State faces Lipscomb and Furman, Saturday, at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
