Bowling Splits Four Decisions in Day One in New Jersey

The Youngstown State bowling team went 2-2 and earned its third win of the season over a top-20 team in the first day of the FDU New Jersey Jamboree at Parkway Lanes in Elmwood Park, N.J. on Friday.
The Penguins began the morning with its highest scoring match of the day in a 947-768 victory over New Jersey City in the five Baker game, total pinfall match. YSU then rolled an 881 in a bye round due to an uneven number of teams at the tournament, and it followed that up with a 937-773 win over #17 Kutztown in the third round. The Penguins lost their last two matches of the day, falling 817-778 to Howard and 856-806 to #21 Valparaiso.
Fairleigh Dickinson, the tournament's host, leads the field with 4,981, and it is followed in the top five by Sam Houston State (4,933), LIU Brooklyn (4,783), Sacred Heart (4,697) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (4,654). YSU sits 17th in total pins in the 27-team tournament after five qualifying rounds with 4,349 pins.
The Penguins will have a challenging slate on Saturday with traditional team matches against Sam Houston State, Lincoln Memorial, Franklin Pierce, Monmouth and LIU Brooklyn.
