Softball Falls Twice at Eastern Michigan

Ypsilanti, Michigan - Sophomores Sarah Dowd and Alexandria Gibson each collected five hits on the day, but the Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games to Eastern Michigan, 5-4, and 12-10, on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field.
The Penguins fall to 16-25 overall while Eastern Michigan improves to 15-25.
In the opener, Dowd and sophomore Brittney Moffatt each had three hits, while Gibson went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
After jumping out to 2-0 lead in the top of the first on run-scoring singles by Miranda Castiglione and Gibson, Eastern Michigan scored one in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Penguins tied the game, 4-4, when Lacatena scored on an error and Kayla Haslett scored on a Dowd single down the left-field line.
The Eagles scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the nightcap, the Penguins trailed 7-0 after two innings and 8-2 after three before using a four-run fourth inning to get within two, 8-6.
Castiglione's two-out, bases-loaded double scored Jordan Macey and Katie Smallcomb. Gibson followed with a two-run single down the left-field line to make the score 8-6.
After the Eagles added a run in the bottom half of the fourth, the Penguins scored four more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-9 lead.
Cali Mikovich's single up the middle scored Castiglione, and, after a single by Lacatena, Gibson scored on a balk to get within one, 9-8.
Jordan Macey came through in the clutch with a two-out single to right field plating Mikovich and Lacatena to take a 10-9 lead.
The Eagles, though, scored three in the bottom half of the sixth to come away with the 12-10 victory.
The Penguins host Green Bay in a three-game Horizon League series, April 24-25. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3 p.m.
