Penguins Fall to Valparaiso in Horizon League Bout

The Youngstown State men's basketball team suffered a 77-62 setback to co-Horizon League leader Valparaiso on Tuesday night at the Beeghly Center.
With the loss the Penguins fall to 9-13 overall and 0-7 in the Horizon League while Valparaiso improves to 18-3 and 5-1.
Leading the way for YSU offensively was Osandai Vaughn who was one-point shy of his career high with 17 points. Vaughn was one of four Guins to reach double figures. Shawn Amiker had 12, all in the first half, Bobby Hain finished with 11 and Cameron Morse came off the bench to finish with 10.
The Crusaders had four players score in double figures led by Alec Peters who had a game-high 18 points. Jubril Adekoya had 14 off the bench while Tevonn Walker finished with 13 and Darien Walker added 12.
For the game YSU shot 35.7 percent making 20-of-56 shots and went 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) from the free-throw line. Valparaiso knocked down 54.9 percent making 28-of-51 attempts, including 10-of-16 from behind the 3-point arc. The Guins had just five turnovers of the contest after committing none in the first half. Valpo outscored YSU 43-37 in the second half.
Vaughn was 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc knocking down half of the Guins' triples in the contest. Morse made two of the other three while Marcus Keene knocked down the other.
At halftime the Penguins trailed 34-25 as Amiker and Vaughn combined for 20 of the Penguins' points. Amiker was 5-of-9 from the field while Vaughn went 2-3, including a pair of 3-pointers. Both players were 4-of-4 from the free-throw line and were 7-of-12 from the field.
Valpo scored the first six points of the game before YSU responded with the next eight. The Guins trailed 15-14 following a 3-pointer by Vaughn with 12:09 remaining in the half. The Crusaders scored the next seven points to go up 22-14 before four straight by Amiker trimmed the deficit to 22-18 at the 7:52 mark.
Valpo closed out the half scoring 12 of the final 19 points to build a nine-point lead at the intermission. Neither team scored the final 2:26 of the period.
In the first half, YSU shot 28.6 percent making 8-of-28 shots while Valparaiso made 13-of-27 for 48.1 percent.
The Penguins conclude their three-game homestand with a Saturday night contest against UIC. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
