After dropping its first set of the season to start the match at Robert Morris, the Youngstown State volleyball team responded emphatically to win the next three and beat the Colonials in four sets. The scores were 19-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-13.
The Penguins hit .302 as a team, including .457 in the final set, to remain hot offensively. Robert Morris hit .273 over the first two sets but negative-0.30 over the final two.
Senior outside hitter Lexi Egler led all players with 17 kills, and she added 14 digs. Freshman Sam Brown also had a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs, and Shannon Watson and Aly Ryan both had double digits in kills. Youngstown State finished with 65 kills, 26 more than Robert Morris had.
"I'm very pleased with the heart of our team," YSU head coach Mark Hardaway said. "Robert Morris came out very aggressively and took it to us in the first set. We felt like we were in control in the second set but were pressing too hard. We put a lot of pressure on them in sets three and four and forced them into trying to catch us."
"I can't say enough about our offense tonight. Val did a great job running it after the first set, and Lexi had a huge night and really got the team going. Shannon and Aly kept Robert Morris's middles out of sync, and Sam had another solid night."
Madelyn Betts had nine kills to lead Robert Morris.
Youngstown State will play two more matches at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational on Saturday. The Penguins will play Indiana State at 1 p.m. and Duquesne at 7 p.m. Both matches at Duquesne's Palumbo Center.
