Hot-Hitting Northwestern Sweeps YSU Volleyball

The Youngstown State volleyball team couldn't keep up with Northwestern's offense and was swept for the first time this season on Friday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The set scores were 25-18, 25-19, 25-16.
Northwestern, which received votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, hit .356 as a team with 50 kills in the three-set win. Youngstown State was limited to 29 kills.
Four different Penguins had at least five kills, and Aly Ryan and Sam Brown led the way with six kills apiece. Lexi Egler and Shannon Watson posted five apiece, and Watson added a team-best three blocks.
Symone Abbott's 16 kills led three Northwestern players who finished in double digits in kills.
Northwestern went on late runs in all three sets to pull away from the Penguins. The Wildcats outscored the Penguins 9-3 to end the first set, and they used an 11-3 spurt in the second set to turn an 11-7 deficit into an 18-13 lead. Northwestern then closed the second set on a 7-2 run, and it completed the sweep by ending the third set on a 10-3 stretch.
Youngstown State will face Virginia in its second match of the day at 6 p.m. Eastern. The Cavaliers lost their first match of the season Friday morning against Loyola Chicago.
