Knight's Late-Inning Heroics Lifts Softball to Split at Akron

Akron, Ohio -- Senior Haley Knight's RBI-fiedler's choice in the top of the seventh inning lifted the Youngstown State to an 8-7 win in game two of a doubleheader and salvaged a doubleheader split against Akron on Tuesday afternoon.

The Penguins improve to 17-16 overall while the Zips move to 16-9.

After the Penguins jumped out to a 7-2 lead after five innings in game two, Akron scored five runs in the bottom of the six inning to tie the game at 7-7.

YSU starter Casey Crozier walked three Zips to load the bases and Akron's Conrad single to cut the deficit to 7-3 and Mailloux two-out grand slam knotted the game at 7-7.

Junior Kayla Haslett led off the top of the seventh with a double and moved to third on Katie Smallcomb's sacrifice bunt. Knight reached on a fielder's choice and Haslett scored the go ahead and eventual winning run.

Freshman Sarah Dowd led off game two with her fifth home run of the season to spur a three-run first inning for the Penguins. Senior Courtney Ewing followed with a double and advanced to third on Miranda Castiglione's sacrifice bunt.

After a walk to senior Sarah Ingalls, Haslett singled home Ewing and Smallcomb's single up the middle plated Ingalls for a 3-0 lead.

Akron plated a run in the bottom of the bottom of the second, the Penguins used a four-run third inning to extend its lead to 7-1. Knight's bases-loaded single pushed the lead to 4-1 and sophomore Jordan Macey drove in two more with a single to right-center field. Dowd, who went 2-for-4, drove in her second run of the game with a single to center.

Akron cut the lead to five, 7-2, with a run in the bottom of the fourth.

In game one, the Penguins managed just four hits in the 8-2 loss. Ingalls belted her fifth home run of the year to cut the Akron lead to 4-2 before the Zips added four more in the bottom half of the frame.

The Penguins host Saint Francis (Pa.), Wednesday, April 9, at 3 p.m. at the YSU Softball Complex.
