Softball Gains Split Saturday at Winthrop Tournament

Rock Hill, S.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team split a pair of games on day one of the Winthrop on Saturday at Terry Field. The Penguins lost to Winthrop, 8-6, and defeated Norfolk State, 3-1.

Junior pitcher Kayla Halsett scattered just six hits with two strikeouts to pick up her second victory of the year in the Penguins, who improve to 5-5, win over Norfolk State.

In the bottom of the second, freshman Maria Lacatena drilled a two-out bases-loaded double to score seniors Sarah Ingalls and Haley Knight to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.

After Norfolk State scored in the top of the fourth, senior Courtney Ewing's fielder's choice scored pinch-runner Darcella Blake to put the Penguins up, 3-1.

Against Winthrop, freshman Sarah Dowd went 2-for-2 with a triple, a three-run home run, three runs scored and four RBIs in the loss.

The Eagles scored three in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead after one, but the Penguins answered with two run in the top of the third to get within one, 3-2. Dowd tripled to right field to score senior Samantha Snodgrass then scored in Ingalls' single to right field.

The Penguins knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth on Ewing's sacrifice fly.

Winthrop regained a 5-3 lead after scoring two in the bottom of the fifth.

Dowd belted her second home run of the year, a three-run shot, to give the Penguins a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

Winthrop, though, scored three more in the bottom half of the sixth to pull out the victory.

The Penguins face Connecticut at 9 a.m. and Norfolk State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
