UAB scored seven runs in the first four innings, and the Youngstown State baseball team couldn't muster enough offense late in a 7-3 loss to the Blazers on Sunday at Regions Field.

Jake Ross was 2-for-4, and Kurt Laver hit a two-run homer to pace the Penguins offensively. Three different UAB players had two hits.

Nic Manuppelli, making his first start in two years, struggled with his command and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, in 2.1 innings. He allowed just three hits, but he walked three and hit four batters.

UAB got a run on a sacrifice fly in the first, and it scored three times on two hits in the second to go up 4-0. The Blazers then added two runs in the third to end Manuppelli's day, and their final run came off reliever Jared Wight with two outs in the fourth.

Nick DiNello singled in a run for YSU in the fifth, but the Penguins missed on an opportunity to cut a chunk out of the lead by leaving the bases loaded. Laver's two-run home run came in the eighth with Lorenzo Arcuri on the bases.

Youngstown State will continue its eight-game road trip at Alabama State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Eastern.
