Volleyball Beats Saint Louis, Falls to Miami (Ohio) on Saturday

St. Louis, Mo. -- The Youngstown State volleyball team split its two matches at the Billiken Challenge on Saturday, beating Saint Louis in four sets and falling to Miami (Ohio) in five at Chaifetz Pavilion.
The Penguins lost the first set to the Billikens 25-23, but they won the next three 25-16, 25-20, 25-21. YSU dropped the first two sets to the RedHawks 25-16 and 27-25, but the Penguins rallied to take the next two 25-19 and 25-16. Miami scored eight of the final nine points of the fifth set to pull away for a 15-9 win.
Missy Hundelt had 14 kills, 13 digs and six blocks against Saint Louis while Shannon Watson registered 10 kills and eight blocks. Alexis Egler led the Penguins with 18 kills against Miami, and Watson finished with 16. Jenna Cavanaugh posted nine blocks.
The Billikens led 14-9 in the first set, but YSU gained some momentum that would carry over to the rest of the match when it tied the score at 19. Saint Louis ended up winning the set 25-23, but YSU went on to take a 13-4 lead in the second set that it eventually won 25-16. The Penguins scored six of the final seven points of the third set to win 25-20, and they overcame a 15-10 deficit in the fourth set by ending the match on a 15-6 run.
Miami went on an 8-2 run midway through the first set en route to a 25-16 win, and it held off the Penguins 27-25 in a second set that did not have a margin greater than three at any point. YSU ended the third set on an 8-2 run to win 25-19, and the Penguins led the fourth set 21-10 in a 25-16 victory. Youngstown State then led 7-5 and 8-7 in the fifth set when the RedHawks finished the match on an 8-1 run. The run featured three kills, two aces, two Penguin hitting errors and a block.
Youngstown State's record moves to 4-6 after the two matches while Saint Louis went to 3-7 and Miami and improved to 8-1.
Youngstown State will play at Bowling Green on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
