- No. 6 Youngstown State advanced in the winner's bracket after upsetting No. 3 Valparaiso, 9-1, in five innings. Junior Casey Crozier fired a four-hitter with nine strikeouts to pick up her 14th victory of the season.
- Junior Courtney Ewing went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while junior Haley Knight was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs to lead the Penguins' 10-hit attack.
- The win marks to first time the Penguins won a first-round tournament game since 2006, the year they won the Horizon League Tournament Championship.
- The Penguins have not won the first two games in the Horizon League Championship since 2006. They also won their first two games in the 2003 tournament.
- Youngstown State is now 9-16 in the Horizon League Softball Championship since joining the league in 2001-02.
- Crozier's 14 wins now rank tied for third on the YSU single-season chart. She also has 39 career wins, which is also tied for third on the career chart.
- Senior Vicky Rumph is the school's career RBI leader with 120.
- Against Valparaiso, the Penguins came up big with runners in scoring position. The Penguins were 7-for-11 (.636) with RISP and 9-for-16 (.563) with runners on base.
- Junior Courtney Ewing has been one of the Penguins hottest hitters over the last 10 games. Ewing is batting .375 (15-for-40) over the last 10 games. In the last two contests, Ewing is 6-of-9 with two doubles and three RBIs.
- This season against Loyola: The Penguins dropped the season series to the Ramblers, falling 6-0 and 8-5. The Penguins defeated the Ramblers, 6-0, between the two losses.
- Crozier fired a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts against the Ramblers on April 18.
- Senior Sarah Gabel, who had a two-run double against Valparaiso in the first-round win, batted .444 against the Ramblers, going 4-for-9 in the three-game series.
- Freshman Kelly Stowe went 3-for-10 against the Ramblers and hit a solo home run off of first-team all-league selection Brittany Gardner in YSU's 6-0 win.
- With a win over the Ramblers, the Penguins will play the winner of the No. 5 Wright State/No. 1 UIC match up, Friday at 2:30 p.m. EDT. With a loss, the Penguins will play Cleveland State later today at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
