Scorching Hot Detroit Downs Penguins at Beeghly Center

The Youngstown State men's basketball team never quite got on track in suffering a 101-60 setback to Detroit on Thursday night at the Beeghly Center.
The victory improves Detroit to 11-5 overall and 3-0 in the Horizon League while the Penguins fall to YSU 9-7 and 1-2.
YSU battled back following a rough start to hold a brief advantage at 14-13 on a 3-pointer by Kendrick Perry at the 10:31 mark of the first half.
The lead was short lived as the Titans went on a huge run to grab control of the game.
Over the next 6:59 Detroit scored 26 of the next 28 points to build a 39-16 lead with 3:20 remaining in the first half. The run started when Evan Bruinsma made a 3-pointer at the 10:19 mark and was capped by a triple by Jason Calliste at the 3:20 mark.
YSU was able to pull within 17 on three consecutive free throws by Cole with just over a minute left in the half, but the Titans led 45-24 at the break by scoring the final four points.
For the half, Detroit shot 47.4 percent making 18-of-38 attempts while grabbing 26 boards and scoring 12 second-chance points off 10 offensive carooms. The Guins made just 7-of-23 attempts (30.4 percent).
In the second half, the Titans kept the Guins at bay, scoring 56 points. YSU finished the half with 36.
For the game, Detroit shot 53.2 percent (41-of-77), including 23-of-39 (59 percent) in the second half. YSU was 20-of-54 for 37 percent. The Titans won the battle of the boards 46-31. The Penguins shot 29 free throws to Detroit's 10.
Leading the Penguins was DJ Cole who scored a career-high 16 points while Damian Eargle finished with 14. Detroit was led by Calliste who scored 27 points. Ray McCallum finished with 19 points while Bruinsma had 17 off the bench.
The Penguins venture up north for two games in Wisconsin beginning next Thursday night at Green Bay. Tipoff at the Resch Center is set for 8 p.m. and will be on 570 WKBN and the Horizon League Network.
