Box Score Niles, Ohio -- Wright State showed why
it's the top offensive team in the Horizon League on Friday,
scoring 15 runs on 17 hits to beat the Youngstown State baseball
team 15-3 in the series opener.
All nine Raiders starters had at least one hit, and the league
leaders got seven strong innings from starter Taylor Braun. Leadoff
hitter Jake Hibberd had three hits, and Tristan Moore drove in four
runs for Wright State.
Jeremy Banks had two RBIs, and Drew Dosch added one for the
Penguins, who lost for just the second time in seven games.
Moore hit a two-run homer in the first, and Ryan Ashe scored on
a sacrifice fly as the Raiders took a 3-0 lead. Banks smoked a
double to the right-field corner to bring in David Leon in the
bottom of the first as the Penguins cut the lead to 3-1.
YSU starter Russ Harless retired eight straight hitters starting
with the sacrifice fly in the first, but Wright State was able to
figure him out again in the fourth. The Raiders scored three runs
in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth to go up
11-1. Dosch doubled in Phil Lipari and later scored on Banks'
ground out as YSU made the score 11-3 in the eighth. Wright State
tacked on four runs in the ninth for the final margin.
After allowing a double and three walks through 1 1-3 innings,
Braun surrendered just two singles until handing the ball off after
seven innings. He improved to 6-1 with the victory while Harless
dropped to 2-5. Harless was charged with eight earned run s on 10
hits in 5 1-3 innings.
The Penguins and Raiders will play game two of their three-game
series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
