UIC Gets Walk-Off Single in the Ninth Beat YSU 4-3

Box Score

Chicago -- UIC got a walk-off RBI single from Nick Addison in the bottom of the ninth inning to turn away the Youngstown State baseball team 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Les Miller field.

Addison's game-winner came after YSU's Drew Dosch tied the score in the top of the ninth with a two-out RBI double. The Penguins also rallied from a 2-0 deficit earlier in the game.

Jason Shirley finished with three hits, and Craig Goubeaux hit his first career home run for the Penguins, who also lost by one to UIC in Friday's series opener.

Cody Dykema was 3-for-3 and scored three runs for UIC, including the game-winner in the ninth.

UIC got an unearned run in the third after a two-out error by shortstop Phil Lipari, and Jon Ryan hit a solo homer in the fourth to put the Flames ahead 2-0. Goubeaux led off the top of the fifth with a homer, and David Leon doubled in Dan Hurlimann later in the inning to tie the score.

YSU starter Patrick O'Brien worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth to keep the game tied, but the Flames ended up scoring twice off of the Penguins' bullpen. With Kevin McCulloh on to start the seventh, Dykema singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Addison then singled him in for the go-ahead run.

The Penguins left the bases loaded in the eighth, but Dosch came up with the big hit in the ninth. Jake Kucek led off with a pinch-hit single, and pinch-runner Chris Mitko went to second on Lipari's sacrifice bunt. Shirley's two-out infield single kept the Guins alive, and Dosch brought in the tying run with his double to right. Shirley was thrown out at the plate trying to score the go-ahead run.

Reliever Nic Manuppelli hit Dykema with a pitch to start the ninth, and the runner went to second on an error on a pickoff attempt. Ryan Shober then sacrificed him to third to set up Addison's RBI single.

O'Brien allowed just one earned run on four hits and three walks in six innings of work for YSU. Manuppelli suffered the loss, allowing the run in the ninth.

UIC starter Brian Evak allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out six in 7.2 innings, and Collin Weyer earned the win despite allowing a run in 1.1 innings.

The Penguins and Flames will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Eastern.
