Box Score Despite some late second-half heroics by Macey Nortey and a season-high 47 3-point attempts, the Youngstown State women's basketball team dropped a 71-66 overtime decision to Wright State on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
In regulation, the Penguins trailed by 10 with under four minutes remaining and as many as 15 points in the second half.
With just under four minutes remaining in regulation, the Guins' offense caught fire. Two free throws by Monica Touvelle started the rally with 3:52 left.
Following a steal by Kenya Middlebrooks, Heidi Schlegel drove the baseline and laid one in off the glass with three minutes left cutting the deficit to 57-51. Just over 30 seconds later, Schlegel went to the basket and connected and was fouled in the process with 2:24 left. Schlegel made the free throw getting the Guins within 57-54.
Wright State pushed its lead up to 59-54 with 1:10 left on a putback by Shaunda Sandifer.
Macey Notey drained a 3-pointer from the corner right in front of the YSU bench with 45.9 seconds left cutting the deficit to 59-57.
After a Raiders miss, Touvelle was short on a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left and on the tie up, possession went to WSU. With 7.9 seconds left Kim Demmings missed the front end of a one-and-one, Middlebrooks grabbed the rebound gave the ball to Nortey who took it up the court and laid it off the glass over Molly Fox with 0.2 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Demmings proved to be too much for YSU to handle.
The team's battled back and forth and with the game tied at 66 with 50.4 seconds left, she connected from 13 feet just outside of the lane and was fouled on the play. After making the free throw, WSU led 69-66.
YSU went inside to Brandi Brown with nine seconds left, but her layup was off the mark and WSU grabbed the rebound to preservee the victory.
Demmings had 25 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Raiders (14-7 overall and 7-2 in the Horizon League). Brown had 11 points to lead YSU.
The 47 3-point attempts were one shy of the school record of 48 set at Pittsburgh on Nov. 12, 2010. The previous season-high for 3-point attempts was 39 against UIC.
For the game, YSU was 22-of-67 from the field (32.8 percent) and 12-of-47 (25.5 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.
Melissa Thompson carried the Penguins in the early going scoring eight points in the games first 4:09.
Behind Melissa Thompson and three points by Brown, YSU held an 11-8 advantage before the Raiders scored the next six points to go on top 14-11. Hornberger tied the contest when she drilled a 3-pointer at the 10:56 mark.
Two free throws by Sandifer put Wright State in front 16-14 with 8:59 left in the first half. The Raiders did not trail the remainder of the half following that point and pushed the lead out to 26-19 with 2:19 left on a Demmings bucket. Monica Touvelle drained a 3-pointer with a minute left before halftime to make the margin 26-22 at the break.
YSU was 8-of-27 from the field, but 21 of the attempts and five of the conversions, came outside the 3-point line. Four players made 3-pointers for the Penguins. Wright State was 10-of-28 from the field (35.7 percent) and made two 3-pointers.
The Penguins (9-11 and 3-6) continue their homestand with a contest against Valparaiso on Thursday night at the Beeghly Center. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
