Volleyball Drops Another Tough One at IU adidas Classic

Bloomington, Ind. -- Sophomores Jackie Carlisle and Missy Hundelt both recorded more than 20 kills, but the Youngstown State volleyball team was kept from that elusive first win again, dropping a five-setter to SEMO to conclude its stay at the IU adidas Classic on Saturday evening. The Penguins were swept by Indiana earlier Saturday.
Against SEMO, Carlisle (Hubbard, Ohio) posted a career-best 24 kills while Hundelt (St. Charles, Mo.) recorded 21. The Penguins had 26 more kills, one more ace and four more blocks than the Redhawks, but they were hurt by committing 11 more attack errors and nine more serving errors.
Shannon Watson (Zoarville, Ohio) added eight kills and five blocks against SEMO, and Erika West (Painesville, Ohio) had 21 digs. Sophomore setter Casey D'Ambrose (Addison, Ill.) had 60 assists and 13 digs as the Penguins hit .242 as a team.
The Redhawks won the first set 25-20, but YSU took the next two 25-21 and 25-22. SEMO held on to win the fourth 27-25, and it needed to push the fifth set to 16-14 before prevailing. YSU had a match point in the fourth set and led the fifth set 5-0.
Hundelt had eight kills, and Nichele Johnson (Conneaut, Ohio) had seven against Indiana, which won 25-17, 27-25 and 25-17.
Indiana finished 3-0 at the tournament while SEMO went 2-1. Buffalo was 1-2.
Youngstown State will host Eastern Michigan in its home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
