Egler Posts 18 Kills in Four-Set Loss to Eastern Michigan

Youngstown -- Youngstown State freshman Alexis Egler recorded a career-high 18 kills, and the Penguins volleyball team made Eastern Michigan work for a four-set win on Tuesday evening at Beeghly Center.
Egler (Clarkston, Mich.) had 18 kills and just four errors in 37 attempts to hit .378. Missy Hundelt (St. Charles, Mo.) added 13 kills and 14 digs for the Penguins, who fell 25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20.
Rachel Iaquaniello had 14 kills and 10 digs for Eastern Michigan, which won four the seventh straight match.
YSU had more kills, 51 to 44, and more digs, 64 to 62, than the Eagles. Eastern Michigan beat YSU 25-14, 25-19, 25-10 last year.
Eastern Michigan went on a five-point run on Kristen Baker's serve to take a 9-3 lead in the first set. The Penguins scored six of the next eight points and trailed just 11-9 following an Iaquaniello error. YSU eventually trimmed the lead to 20-19 on another Iaquaniello error, but Eastern Michigan closed out the set on a 5-1 run.
The Eagles went on a 13-4 run midway through the second set and led 21-11 on a Paige Roback ace. YSU gained some momentum by closing the gap to 23-16, and it carried on to the third set.
The Penguins never trailed in the third, and they scored seven straight points on Shannon Watson's serve to go up 8-1. Egler had four kills during the run, and Hundelt had three. Eastern Michigan inched back and trailed just 18-15, but a kill from Jackie Carlisle (Hubbard, Ohio) started a three-point run that pushed the advantage to six. YSU never led by fewer than four the rest of the way. Egler had seven kills in the set while Hundelt had six. Eastern Michigan only had five as a team.
Eastern Michigan went on two four-point runs in the fourth set and converted on 75 percent of its sideout chances. YSU led 6-3 early, and EMU's first four-point run gave it a 7-6 lead. YSU tied the score, and neither team led by more than one until a Cassie Sowers kill put the Eagles up 14-12. Haley Stein's ace made the score 18-14 in favor of the visitors, but YSU was able to climb back to within one on a Hundelt kill at 19-18. Bri Kern's foot fault gave the serve back to Eastern Michigan, and the Eagles went on to score three more points to go up 23-18.
Sophomore libero Erika West (Painesville, Ohio) finished with a match-high 21 digs while Shannon Watson (Zoarville, Ohio) tied for top honors with five blocks.
Youngstown State heads back on the road for three matches at the Maddie Binghaman Memorial Tournament at UMBC this weekend.
