Shorthanded Penguins Fall at Wright State in League Opener

Dayton, Ohio -- A shorthanded Youngstown State volleyball team dropped its season opener at Wright State, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23, on Friday evening at C.J. McClin Gymnasium.
Freshman outside hitter Alexis Egler finished with a match-high 11 kills and 14 digs to collect her first career double-double. Egler hit .240, and Jenna Cavanaugh hit .375 with five kills, but the Penguins had a team attack percentage of just .058.
YSU was playing without sophomore Missy Hundelt, who was averaging greater than one kill more than any of her teammates.
Alaina McCauley had 11 kills, and Heidi Splinter had 17 digs for Wright State.
Wright State never trailed in the opening set, but YSU overcame a six-point deficit to tie the score at 17-17 following three straight Raider attack errors. YSU led 3-0 in the second set before Wright State took the lead at 10-9 and never relinquished it.
There were 10 ties and seven lead changes in the third set, and neither team led by more than three points until Wright State took a 22-18 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Jackie Carlisle knotted the score at 23-23, but Carlisle had errors on the next two points to end the match.
Youngstown State will play at Butler on Saturday at 4 p.m.
