Norfolk State Rallies to Beat Volleyball in Five

Baltimore, Md. -- Norfolk State rallied from down two sets to defeat the Youngstown State volleyball team in five sets on Saturday at UMBC's Maddie Bingaman Tournament.
The Spartans, who lost the first two sets 28-26 and 25-20, hit .364 over the final three as they won 25-17, 25-20, 17-15.
Missy Hundelt (St. Charles, Mo.) had 19 kills while Jackie Carlisle (Hubbard, Ohio) and Alexis Egler (Clarkston, Mich.) had 13 kills apiece for YSU.
Charlotte Armstead and Adriana Ramos both had 20 kills for Norfolk State. Armstead hit .533 for the match.
Norfolk State led 9-6 early in the first set, but YSU scored four straight points to go ahead 10-9 on a Casey D'Ambrose kill. Neither team led by more than one until a bad set put the Penguins up 22-0, and the next two-point edge came when Shannon Waton and D'Ambrose blocked Beatriz Ferreira on set point. Hundelt seven kills in the opening set, including one on Norfolk State's set point.
The Penguins built an 18-11 lead after a Hundelt ace in the second set, but Norfolk State scored five straight points to cut the margin to three. That's as close as the Spartans would get, however, and back-to-back kills from Hundelt and Egler closed out the set at 25-20.
Norfolk State hit .381 in the third set and .370 in the fourth to take those two sets. The Spartans jumped out to a 7-1 lead, and YSU was only able to trim the margin to two twice. After the score was 13-11, Norfolk State went on an 11-4 run to go up 24-15. The Spartans led 16-9 in the fourth and held on once YSU got to within 23-20.
Norfolk State led 3-0 in the fifth before YSU scored the next four points to go up 4-3 on an Egler kills. YSU opened up a 14-12 lead, but Norfolk State staved off two match points to tie the score at 14-14 after a bad set. An attack error erased a Norfolk State match point at 15-14, but a service error and a blocking error by YSU handed the match to the Spartans.
YSU opens Horizon League play at Wright State on Friday at 6 p.m.
