Volleyball Drops Another Five-Setter at Kent State

Kent, Ohio -- The Youngstown State volleyball team went five sets for the third time in four matches this season, but the Penguins were kept from their first win again with a loss at Kent State on Tuesday evening.
Missy Hundelt (St. Charles, Mo.) posted 15 kills, 10 of which came in the final two sets, and 10 digs to lead Youngstown State. Jackie Carlisle (Hubbard, Ohio) added a career-best 12 kills, and Erika West (Painesville, Ohio) Had a match-high 18 digs.
Kathy Krupa had 16 kills, and Maigan Larsen added 15 kills and 11 digs for Kent State.
The Penguins dominated the first and fourth sets in winning 25-18 in both, and they were turned away 25-23 in the second. Kent State controlled the third set, winning 25-16, and the Golden Flashes scored six of the final seven points in the fifth set to win 15-9.
Youngstown State scored six straight points late in the first set that carried it to a 25-18 win. Egler had four kills in the set, including one that started the six-point run that put the Guins on top 22-15.
Neither team scored more than three consecutive points in the second set, but Kent State scored on three of the final four rallies to even the match with a 25-23 win. A Hundelt attack error allowed Kent State to take a 21-18 lead, but the Penguins scored the next three points to knot the score.
Kent State benefitted from 11 YSU attack errors in the third set to cruise to a 25-16 victory. The Golden Flashes went up 12-6 on YSU's sixth error of the set, and the Penguins could not get closer than five the rest of the way.
YSU built an 11-7 lead in the fourth set on a Casey D'Ambrose (Addison, Ill.) ace, and the Guins forced Kent State to call a timeout when a Hundelt kill made the score 16-10. YSU went up 22-15 on a Carlisle kill, and Watson's first career ace came on set point. Hundelt had six kills in the set, and the Penguins hit .433 as a team.
Kent State went up 7-3 in the fifth on a Krupka kill, but YSU scored the next three points to get within one on a Hundelt kill. An error by Krupa made cut YSU's deficit to just 9-8, but Kent State scored six of the next seven points in its way to its third win of the campaign.
Youngstown State will play Buffalo to open the IU adidas Classic in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday at 5 p.m.
