
Softball Adds Single Game at Ohio State, Visits Butler For League Series

The Youngstown State softball team picked up a single game against Ohio State tonight at 7 p.m. before heading to Indianapolis for a three-game Horizon League series against Butler, April 22-23.
Scouting the Buckeyes
The Buckeyes own a 10-27 overall record and are led offensively by Alicia Herron, who is batting .390 with six home runs and 24 runs batted in. Brittany Goodchild ranks second on the squad with a .340 batting average and Evelyn Carrillo leads the team with 26 runs batted in and is tied with Herron for the team's home run lead with six. This will be the 12th meeting between the Penguins and Buckeyes and OSU owns an 11-0 advantage in the all-time series. This is the first meeting since the 2001 season.
Scouting Butler
Butler currently leads the Horizon League with an 11-3 league record and owns a 25-17 overall record. The Bulldogs have been led by two of the top pitchers in the Horizon League in Jennifer Chasteen and Jenny Esparza. Chasteen has a team-best 1.38 earned-run average and a 10-5 record while Esparza leads the team with a 12-5 mark and 149 strikeouts with an earned-run average of 2.07. Lauren McNulty leads the offense with a .33 batting average while Erin Faulkenberry has crushed 11 home runs and with a .328 average.
Guins Rank High Nationally
Not only is Youngstown State the top hitting team in the Horizon League with its .316 team batting average, but it ranks 26th nationally. The Guins have seven players batting above .300 led by Jordan Ingalls .400 batting average. Ingalls league-high batting average also ranks 87th in the country.
Rumph Tough to Strikeout
Sophomore Vicky Rumph is one tough strikeout. Rumph, who is batting .356, has struck out eight times in 118 at-bats for an average of one strikeout every 14.8 at-bats. She ranks 90th in the nation in toughest to strikeout category.
Thomas Reaches Century Mark
Junior Haley Thomas has moved into some elite company of the annals of Youngstown State softball. With three runs scored against Valparaiso on Sunday, April 17, Thomas became just the second player in school history to cross the plate at least 100 times. She ranks second with 102 runs scored and needs just 25 more to surpass Tiffany Patteson (126) as the schools all-time leader.
