Box Score Buffalo, N.Y. -- Canisius scored nine runs
on 15 hits in the first five innings, and six of its seven pitchers
had scoreless outings in an 11-3 victory over the Youngstown State
baseball team on a windy Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports
Complex.
A leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly gave Canisius a 1-0 lead in
the first inning, and the Golden Griffins blew the game open with a
five-run third. Two of the runs came on bases-loaded walks, and
three runs came in before the first out was recorded.
A one-out RBI double in the fourth made the score 7-0, and four
straight hits with one out in the fifth put Canisius ahead by nine.
The Golden Griffins added two more runs in the seventh.
Joe Iacobucci's two-out, two-run double in the top of the eighth
gave the Penguins their first runs of the contest. The inning was
prolonged when Chris Mitko reached on a passed ball after striking
out, and Jeremy Banks walked to put two runners on for Iacobucci.
Craig Goubeaux followed with a double to plate Iacobucci and make
the score 11-3.
Iacobucci, Goubeux and Neil Schroth all had two hits apiece, but
every other Penguin combined to go 1-for-21. Four of the Penguins'
seven hits went for extra bases, and Goubeaux accounted for two of
those with a pair of doubles.
Leadoff hitter Jose Torralba had three hits and scored four
times, and No. 2 hitter Chris Gruarin went 2-for-3 with three runs
scored and three RBIs for Canisius. Starter Alex Tufts allowed one
hit in three innings before handing the ball off to the bullpen.
YSU's three runs, which were all unearned, came off Jordan Cave.
Canisius' pitchers combined to strike out 14 hitters.
Blake Aquadro allowed six runs on six hits and six walks in 2.1
innings in a losing effort. Erik Okleson allowed five runs in 4.2
innings, and Jonathan Crist did not allow a run or hit in his first
career appearance.
The Penguins will welcome Cleveland State to Eastwood Field for
a three-game series this weekend. First pitch in game one of the
set will be Friday at 3 p.m.
