After two weeks off and four straight victories, the Youngstown State softball team returns to action in a doubleheader against South Carolina State, Thursday, March 10, at Noon. The Guins also face Savannah State in a doubleheader on Friday, March 11, at 1 p.m.
This will be the second time the Guins face South Carolina State this season, and the fifth time in the last two seasons. Earlier this year, the Guins defeated the Bulldogs, 9-1, on Feb. 27. Last season, the Guins and Bulldogs split a doubeheader in Orangeburg, S.C. The Bulldogs won, 6-4, while the Guins won, 12-0.
This will be the first time the Guins have faced Savannah State.
The Streak
The Guins are the winners of four straight games - the first time they have won four in a row since 2010 and just the second time since 2006. The Guins have not won five consecutive games since they won five in 20006.
Best Start Since 2003
At 5-3, the Guins are off to their best start after eight games since the 2003 season when they went 5-3. That season, the Guins set a school record with 36 wins.
Crozier Named Pitcher of the Week
Freshman Casey Crozier was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 28. The right-hander picked up her first two career victories and first career save to lead the Guins to four straight victories. Crozier struck out five in a complete-game win over Delaware State on Feb. 26 while allowing just five hits. She fired a two-hit shutout over Siena with four strikeouts and zero walks.
Rendle Starting Strong
Senior Kristina Rendle is off to a fast start for the Guins. Rendle is batting .375 overall and .385 over the last four games.
Gabel Has Double Vision
Sophomore Sarah Gabel has had a penchant for collecting two-base hits so far this season. Gabel has five hits in seven at-bats for a batting average of .571. Plus, three of her five hits have been doubles.
Up Next
The Guins stay on the road for the next 12 days and play 10 games over spring break at the Rebel Games, March 13-18, in Kissimmee, Fla.
