Switka, Leon Lead Baseball to 4-3 Victory Over Toledo

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. -- David Leon went 5-for-5, and Youngstown State starter Robert Switka pitched seven strong innings to lead the Penguins to a 4-3 victory over Toledo on Friday at Pitt's Panther Classic.

The Penguins finished with 12 hits and executed well at the plate all afternoon to up their record to 2-12. Toledo dropped to 4-11.

Neither team scored more than one run in any inning, and the lead was never more than one at any point. Three of YSU's runs scored with two outs.

After Toledo tied the score for the second time in the bottom of the seventh, Jeremy Banks got the Penguins going in the top of the eighth with a one-out double off the base of the wall in right center. Joe Iacobucci flied out to center for the second out, and an intentional walk to Jonathan Crist put runners on first and second. Banks took third on a delayed steal, and Armani Johnson brought him in for the winning run on an infield single.

Padraic Williams allowed only a wind-aided single to left in two innings of relief to earn his second save.

Switka, a sophomore who graduated from Ursuline, allowed two earned runs on eight hits and one walk in the seven innings to earn his first collegiate victory.

In addition to Leon's five hits, Drew Dosch and Neil Schroth had two hits apiece. Leon was a double shy of hitting for the cycle.

"This was a big win against a good team," YSU head coach Rich Pasquale said. "Switka threw strikes did an awesome job for us on the mound. We were resilient all day and kept getting big hits when we needed them."

"Leon had a heck of a day both offensively and defensively. If we can continue to play hard every day, good things will happen for us."

Toledo's Ben Hammer singled in Matt Delewski for the game's first run in the bottom of the second, but Leon hit a solo homer with two outs in the third to tie the score. It was Leon's second round-tripper of the season and his first since the season opener.

The Penguins then took their first lead in the fifth with another two-out hit from Leon. Schroth singled to lead off the inning and advanced on Phil Lipari's sacrifice. Two batters later, Leon tripled to deep right to plate Schroth with the go-ahead run.

Toledo scored an unearned run in the sixth, but YSU reclaimed the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. Schroth hit a leadoff triple to right and came home shortly after on Lipari's sacrifice fly. Toledo tied the score again in the bottom of the seventh when Hammer scored on Chris Dudics' two-out single.

Hammer and Delewski had two hits apiece for Toledo.

Reliever Ryan Wilkinson was charged with the loss, allowing one run on one hit in an inning of work. Mike Hamann pitched the first 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out seven.

Youngstown State will play three more games this weekend at the Panther Classic. The Penguins will play Pitt at noon and Niagara at 3 p.m. on Saturday. YSU will then play Toledo again on Sunday at noon.
