Sarah Gabel's Sacrifice Fly Lifts Penguins to Split on Day One at Rebel Games

Kissimmee, Fla. -- Sophomore Sarah Gabel's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Youngstown State softball team to a 4-3 win over Manhattan on Sunday afternoon at the Rebel Games. The Guins also lost a tough 11-9 decision to South Dakota.
The Guins improve to 9-5 overall with the win overall.
With the international tie-breaker in effect, senior Kristina Rendle was place on second base. Junior Jordan Ingalls moved Rendle to with a sacrifice bunt and after a walk to Vicky Rumph, Gabel lifted a fly-ball to left field to score Rendle.
In the top of the eighth, Nicole Michel's sacrifice bunt advanced Melissa Donnelly to third. However, on the next pitch, Donnelly was caught off third base and chased down by catcher Amanda Palmore for the second out.
Casey Crozier, who picked up her sixth win of the season, induced a ground out to end the inning.
The Guins trailed Manhattan 3-0 in the bottom of the when junior Haley Thomas led off the frame with a double to left field. Rendle singled up the middle to plate Thomas, then Rumph belted a one-out, two-run home run - her third of the season - to tie the game at 3-3.
In the first game against South Dakota, the Guins trailed 4-0 after four innings. In the top of the fifth, the Guins sent 12 batters to the plate and exploded for nine runs to take a 9-4 lead.
Thomas began the rally with a leadoff single, moved to second on a passed ball and after a walk to Rendle, scored on a double Jordan Ingalls.
Back-to-back walks to Rumph and Courtney Ewing scored Rendle to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
After Kim Klonowski reached on a fielder's choice and forced Ingalls out at home, Gabel , who went 3-for-4, singled to right field and scored Rumph with the Guins' third run.
Bases-loaded walks to Kristen Philen and Sarah Ingalls to scored Ewing and Klonowski to put the Guins up 5-4.
Rendle then ripped a bases-clearing triple to right field to put the Guins up 8-4 and scored on passed ball to give the Guins a 9-4 lead.
The Coyotes, though, scored two in the bottom of the fifth and five in the bottom of the sixth to capture the 11-9 win.
The Guins take on Rider and Hartford on Monday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
