Softball Drops Pair on Day One at Phoenix Leadoff Classic

Elon, N.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team (0-2) opened the 2011 season with a pair of losses at the Phoenix Leadoff Classic on Saturday. The Guins lost to Kent State, 9-1, and Elon, 4-3, in the night cap.
In the first game, Kent State scored five unearned runs in the second inning to jumpstart its offense which pounded out 10 hits.
The Penguins tallied only three hits - a double by Vicky Rumph and singles by Kristina Rendle and Kristen Philen.
In the night cap, Elon scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning
Rumph and Caroline Krombach each went 2-for-3 while Kim Klonowski, Jordan Ingalls and Rendle each drove in runs, but the Guins stranded 11 runners on base in the 4-3 loss.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on Klonowski's run-scoring single, the Guins fell behind, 3-1, giving up two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
The Guins knotted up the game with two runs in the top half of the sixth inning.
Philen led off the frame with a double to left field and moved to third on Krombach's single up the middle. After a walk to Haley Thomas, Rendle singled through the right side to plate Philen and move Krombach to third.
Krombach tied the game on Jordan Ingalls' sacrifice fly to right field.
The Guins take on Kent State 11 a.m. and Elon at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
