Women's Basketball

Guins Go for Tournament Crown Saturday vs. UNI

The Youngstown State women's basketball team will play the University of Northern Iowa for the DoubleTree L.A. Westside Thanksgiving Classic Championship on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. Eastern at Loyola Marymount's Gersten Pavilion. The game will be broadcast live on 570wkbn.com, and live stats will be available on lmulions.com. The Penguins got to the championship game by defeating the host LMU Lions 64-50 on Friday. UNI reached the title game with a 60-46 win over Wyoming.

  • Youngstown State has now won three straight road games for the first time since the 1999-2000. The Penguins won at IPFW on Nov. 13, at Bucknell on Nov. 16 and at Loyola Marymount yesterday. YSU won four road straight games in 1999-2000 twice, the last time from Jan. 22 to Feb. 12. YSU's group of freshmen were in first grade that academic year. YSU's last won three straight non-conference road games in the 1997-98 season.
  • Brandi Brown became the 17th player in YSU women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points. Brown reached 1,000 with a free throw at the 15:06 mark of the first half, and her 19 points for the game brought her to 1,018 for her career. She ranks 16th in career scoring at YSU, and she is 51 points behind Vicki Lawrence for 15th. Brown reached 1,000 points in her 65th game.
  • Heidi Schlegel posted her first career double-double against Loyola Marymount. She had 17 points, which matched her season high, and a career-best 10 rebounds. Schlegel had 13 points and five rebounds in the second half. Nine of her points came right after her own offensive rebounds. Schlegel's previous career high in rebounding was eight against American last year. The redshirt freshman also had a career-best five assists.
  • Kenya Middlebrooks had four of YSU's 10 3-pointers in the contest. Middlebrooks now has 11 for the season and 97 for her career. She needs five to reach the top 10 in most 3-pointers in school history. Middlebrooks had two 3-pointers as a freshman, 24 as a sophomore and 60 as a junior.
  • Kelsea Fickiesen doubled her previous career with six rebounds. She had six points, six rebounds and the first three assists of her collegiate career in 22 minutes.
  • The Penguins outscored the Lions 20 to 6 off of turnovers despite committing one more turnover than LMU. YSU has now outscored each of its first five opponents off of turnovers. The Penguins also won the battle in the paint, 26-20. YSU has outscored its last four opponents in the paint.
