Volleyball Falls in Three at UIC

Chicago -- The University of Illinois at Chicago posted a .350 team attack percentage and got 19 kills from Kelsey Safranek to sweep the Youngstown State volleyball team 25-22, 25-14, 25-22 on Saturday at the Flames Athletic Center.
Sophomore Missy Hundelt (St. Charles, Mo.) had 12 kills and hit .281 to lead YSU. Freshman Shannon Watson (Zoarville, Ohio) had three blocks and three aces, and senior Bri Kern (Indianapolis, Ind.) had 12 digs.
Aubrey Sniegowski added 10 kills on a .643 attack percentage, and Janie Dismuke had six blocks.
UIC led by as many as eight in the first set before YSU rallied to make it close late. The Flames led 13-5, but a Hundelt ace cut the margin to 19-16. YSU got within three four more times before a Jackie Carlisle kill made the score 24-22. Safranek followed with a kill on set point to give the Flames a one-set lead.
UIC had 13 kills without an attack error in the second set as it won 25-14. After the Guins led 4-2 following a Hundelt kill, UIC went on an 11-2 run to go up 13-6. The Penguins never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
There were 12 ties and six lead changes in the competitive third set. UIC led 7-3 early, but YSU rallied and took a 10-9 lead on a Watson ace. After a Nichele Johnson (Conneaut, Ohio) kill made the score 13-11, neither team led by more than one until the Penguins led 19-17. The Penguins still led 21-20 after an Alexis Egler (Clarkston, Mich.) block, but UIC ended the match by scoring five of the final six points. Safranek had kills on three of the Flames' last four points.
Youngstown State will play at Valparaiso on Sunday at 3 p.m. Eastern.
