Box Score Niles, Ohio -- Wright State scored seven runs
between the third and fifth innings and eight consecutive runs
overall to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 8-3 on
Saturday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins, playing their final home contest of the season,
took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior Anthony Porter
singled in Zac McFarland. Wright State, though, tied the score in
the third, then scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth
innings en route to completing a three-game sweep of the Penguins.
Porter and his 11 senior teammates were honored prior to the
game as they played for the final time at Eastwood Field.
Senior Tom Clayton drove in two runs in the ninth inning as YSU
cut the margin to 8-3. The Penguins had two runners on with two
outs when Padraic Williams was thrown out on a close play at first
on a hard liner back at pitcher Michael Meintel. Senior C.J. Morris
added two hits, and Jeremy Banks also had two.
Ryan Ashe had three hits, one of which was an inside-the-park
home run, and drove in three runs to lead Wright State.
Youngstown State starter Blake Aquadro faced the minimum through
the first two innings, and the Penguins' offense game him a 1-0
lead with a run in the second. McFarland drew a leadoff walk, and
he moved to third on a ground out and Eric Marzec's single. After
Marzec was thrown out at second trying to advance on a pitch in the
dirt, Porter drove in McFarland with a single to right.
The Raiders, who came up with clutch two-out hits all weekend,
tied the contest in the third with back-to-back two-out hits. With
nobody on base, Aaron Fields doubled to center, and Casey McGrew
followed with a triple deep to just left of center. Wright State
got three more two-out runs in the fourth on Garrett Gray's solo
homer and Ashe's inside-the-parker to center with Tristan Moore
aboard.
The first four Wright State batters reached in the fifth to
chase Aquadro from the game, and Cody Dearth was brought in to work
out of a bases loaded jam and nobody out. He walked Quentin Cate to
bring a run in, but he got Gray to foul out, Moore to hit into a
sacrifice fly and Ashe to ground out to minimize the damage. Dearth
allowed one run on one hit in three innings of relief to keep the
game close.
The Penguins, though, couldn't corral an offensive attack as the
bullpen did its job. They stranded a runner in scoring position in
the fifth, and they stranded two runners in both the sixth and
seventh innings. Ashe singled in Gray in the eighth to give Wright
State its 8-1 advantage.
YSU didn't go quietly in the ninth. Morris and Eric Hymel hit
back-to-back singles with one out, and they advanced to second and
third when Jacke Healey flew out to deep center. Clayton, who
extended his hitting streak to eight games, singled in both runs
after fouling off several of Meintel's offerings. Joe Iacobucci
singled just in front of Moore's diving attempt in right, and
Williams hit a hard shot right at Meintel that the right-hander
deflected and recovered to throw him out by a half step.
Aquadro suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in
four innings. Jon Durket improved to 2-1 for Wright State, allowing
one run on six hits in five innings.
All 12 seniors made an appearance this weekend. Ten of them were
in the line-up today, and Aaron Swenson and Trent Wood both pitched
on Friday.
The Penguins will concentrate on their final exams this week
before heading to Cleveland State over the weekend. YSU and
Cleveland State will play one game Friday at 4 p.m. and a
doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
