Softball Falls to Flames, 5-4, in 12 Innings

Canfield, Ohio -- Senior Cheryl Cale turned in a yeoman's effort pitching 12 innings and throwing 183 pitches but UIC's Shannon Kehr's solo home run in the top of the 12th frame was deciding factor in a 5-4 win over the Youngstown State softball team on Sunday morning at McCune Park.
The Penguins fall to 13-30 overall and 6-12 in the Horizon League while the Flames improve to 17-29 overall and 10-6 in the league.
In the top of the seventh with a 3-1 lead, Cale was one strike from victory when Stephanie Chavez singled up the middle and plated Teresa Aguilar and Coryn Schmidt with the game-tying runs.
The Flames took their first lead of the game in the top of the 10th inning when Brooke Frydendall, who doubled, tagged to third on a fly ball to right field and scored when the ball ricocheted into the Flames' dugout.
The Penguins knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the frame when freshman Vicky Rumph singled home Haley Thomas, who walked and advanced to second on Kristina Rendle's sacrifice bunt.
The Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Consecutive singles by Jordan Ingalls and Autumn Grove put runners at first and second, and a third straight safety by Kristen Philen, who had three hits, plated Ingalls.
In the fourth, Ingalls doubled to left-center field and was thrown out at home on Grove's single to right field. Philen singled pushing Grove to third then stole second base. Philen stole second and moved to third on an error and Grove scored on the play.
Sophomore Amanda Palmore doubled to right-center field scored Philen to give the Penguins a 3-0 advantage.
UIC's Devin Miller pitched eight innings of relief allowing just five hits and striking out 11.
The Penguins close out the home portion their schedule when they host Niagara, Wednesday, April 28, at 3 p.m.
