Box Score Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State will look for
some redemption against Pittsburgh on Wednesday when the teams
square off at Eastwood Field at 3 p.m. The Penguins led the
Panthers 11-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when
the teams played in Pittsburgh on March 17. Pitt, however, scored
10 runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to steal a
15-11 victory from the Guins.
YSU is coming off a series win against Le Moyne over the weekend
while Pittsburgh swept Villanova. The Panthers are ranked 24th
nationally by Collegiate Baseball. That is their highest ranking in
school history.
On the Mound
Freshman right-hander Kevin McCulloh is scheduled to make his
first career start against Pittsburgh on Wednesday. He has made 16
relief appearances, and his longest outing was 3.2 innings at new
Orleans in the third game of the season. Pitt scored four runs
against him last month in a third of an inning. McCulloh walked
two, hit a batter and allowed a hit.
Quick Pitches
YSU already has more wins than last season. YSU was 9-24 through
33 games in 2009.Wednesday's game is YSU's first of five games over
the next five days.The Penguins' last win over a ranked opponent
was a doubleheader sweep of No. 29 Oral Roberts on April 18,
1999.YSU hit eight home runs in the first four games in April. The
Guins have since hit one round-tripper in the last eight
contests.YSU is 8-1 when scoring at least 10 runs. The lone loss
came at Pitt on March 17 (15-11).Sunday's 4-1 win over Le Moyne was
YSU's first victory this year when scoring fewer than five runs.The
Guins had at least 12 hits in seven straight games from March 27 to
April 7. They've had 12 once in the past eight contests.
Scouting Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh enters the week ranked No. 24 for the second
consecutive week by Collegiate Baseball. The Panthers are 26-9
overall and 9-3 in the Big East. Pitt plays Kent State, which beat
the Panthers 19-6 earlier in the year, on Tuesday. Pitt swept
Villanova over the weekend and defeated cross-town rival Duquesne
21-9 last Wednesday. Four players who have played in at least 19
games are hitting above .400, and six more are batting above .320.
Pittsburgh is hitting .369 as a team, which ranks second in the
country. Sean Toole leads the way with a .472 average, and Joe
Leonard is batting .424 with 16 doubles. Cory Crownsten, who is
hitting .412, is the reigning Big East Player of the Week.
