Box Score 2 Niles -- The Youngstown State baseball made eight early runs
hold up for an 8-6 victory in game one while Le Moyne came back to
earn a 6-1 win in the second contest as the team's split a
doubleheader on a cool afternoon at Eastwood Field.
In the first game, the Penguins scored all eight of their runs
in the first three innings. Le Moyne made things interesting late
scoring three times in the seventh, three times in the eight and
having the tying run in scoring position with one out in the ninth.
After walking the first two batters of the ninth, closer Eric Marzec
settled down and struck out the side to earn his fifth save of the
season.
Derek
Carr opened the contest with a single to center field and later
came home on a sacrifice fly to center by Marzec. In the second
inning, YSU increased its advantage to 2-0 when C.J. Morris
scored on a two-out bases-loaded walk by Jacke Healey.
The Penguins jumped on Dolphins starter Cory Nelson for six runs
in the third inning.
After Marzec was retired to start the inning, the next seven
Guins reached base and six came around to score. With one out, Joe
Iacobucci and Zac McFarland
both singled and Anthony
Porter loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Morris'
single to right field scored Iacobucci and McFarland to make the
contest 4-0. Jeremy Banks
followed with a single through the right side that plated Porter
making the score 5-0. Carr followed with another single to the
right side scoring Morris and Healey followed with a single back up
the middle that scored Banks. The final run of the inning came home
on a Tom
Clayton ground out to first base.
Swenson pitched seven strong innings allowing just four runs -
three earned - while striking out five. With the win he improves to
6-0 on the campaign. Nelson was saddled with the loss and is now
1-4.
Game two featured a gem by Dolphins' hurler Jeff Tardiff (4-3).
He tossed a seven-inning complete game allowing just one run on
four hits while while striking out four. YSU's Phil Klein (2-2)
took the loss despite allowing just one earned run, three total, in
4.1 innings. Klein allowed six hits and had one strikeout.
Le Moyne scored once in the second, one in the third and two in
the fifth and one in the sixth to back Tardiff.
YSU finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth loading the
bases with no outs. The Guins were able to score once, but Tardiff
worked out of the jam getting Marzec to line out to third with two
runners on to end the inning.
Of the six runs surrendered by YSU's three pitchers in game two,
only one was earned.
Following the results of the two games on Saturday, the Penguins
are 16-16 while the Dolphins are 20-20.
The Penguins and Dolphins are scheduled to conclude the series
on Sunday. First pitch at Eastwood Field is set for noon.
